Chapter Four

Two weeks before Nick was to leave, Riley went home from a date to find her mother on the floor. She couldn't wake her. She panicked and called Nick.

"I'll be right there, honey, call an ambulance."

Riley called and by the time Nick and his father got there, they were wheeling her out.

"They said she's in a coma." She cried.

Nick's father shook his head and held Riley, "It's going to be alright, hon. You're coming home with us as soon as we get her settled." He affirmed.

Riley didn't argue.

At the hospital they told her that she was in a diabetic coma and that she was in ICU and would be there for days.

"Can I see her?"

"She won't know you are there." They told her. "You should go home, get some rest and come back tomorrow."

Riley hated leaving her there. But Nick insisted they needed to go to her house and pack her stuff and move her into the spare room at his parent's house.

"I hate to intrude…"

"You aren't, your family young lady…now let's not hear another word of it." His father told her.

The hospital was only a couple of blocks from the high school so she went to check on her mother every day, but there was no improvement.

Finally, she talked to a doctor. "Is she going to die?"

"We hope not. But at this point we aren't sure of everything that is going on."

"You know she was drinking?" She asked.

"Yes, that was obvious." The doctor said. "Her blood work showed a very unhealthy level.

"What can I do?"

"Not a lot except pray and visit her often as you can." He told her.

Riley nodded.

Nick assured her, that in time she'd get well. Riley wasn't so sure.

One evening before he left, he decided to take Riley out. He took her to the best restaurant and they had steaks. Then he took her to the cabin again.

"You brought me here?" She smiled.

"It's kind of like, our place. I wanted to be alone with you." He told her.

Nick was going to miss their graduation, but he had to be in Michigan for pre-sign up. "Do your folks know we are here?"

"Yes, they do. They even suggested it. They thought you needed to get away and forget your problems for a while."

"Oh Nick, I don't know what I'd have done if it hadn't been for your family and you. I don't want to be a burden to anyone."

"They are actually looking forward to you staying because I'll be gone and they can spoil you a little. It will help them, is what I'm trying to say." He smiled. "Do you like this place?"

"Oh, it's lovely."

"We've got to start making plans for our future, honey."

"Don't you think it's too early for that. I mean, you don’t' even know how this football thing will work out for you." She sighed.

"I know one thing," He said, lifting her hair and kissing her on the neck.

"What," she sighed into him now.

"You are definitely going to be in my future."

"How do you know that?" She asked looking into his shining eyes.
